Shadow boxes, dioramas, lantern collars and strung garlands — the flat sheets that become depth once they are folded and stacked. Plans carry the spacer depths and the order the layers sit in, because that is where these go wrong.

Mobiles fail for one reason: the tiers are not balanced, so the whole thing hangs at an angle and stops turning. Five rings, each measured against the one above before gluing, hung from a 200 mm hoop on nylon line rather than thread.

Bunting hangs badly for two reasons: the tape is one long strip that twists, and the pennants are cut with a 200 gsm card body but no spine. This string uses four 800 mm tape sections, one fold per pennant, and alternates the drop by 24 mm.

The depth cue that makes a paper diorama work is not the number of layers, it is the gap between them. Seven ridges at 13 mm, each one 6% lighter than the one in front of it, plus waxed tracing paper between the front two for haze.

A shadow box fails at the corners long before it fails at the scenery. This one is built as a single cross net with 10 mm tabs, dry-fitted with masking tape first, and glued only once the aperture has been checked against a set square.

A collar is the cheapest way to change a plain paper lantern: a 660 mm band, twelve score lines, two folds — and the band is joined at 330 mm rather than cut from one long sheet, because the join is hidden under a pleat and a single 660 mm sheet is four times the price.
